London Bridge Hospital pioneers da Vinci SP system for lung patients
HCA Healthcare UK has become the first provider in the UK and among the first in Europe to offer robotic-assisted thoracic surgery using the da Vinci SP (Single Port) system, now available at London Bridge Hospital.
Led by Consultant Thoracic Surgeon Mr Tom Routledge, this approach allows complex lung procedures through a single 5cm incision, significantly reducing pain, shortening hospital stays, and enabling quicker patient recovery—particularly for those with lung cancer.
Key highlights:
- Three wristed instruments + HD 3D camera operate through a single flexible cannula
- Benefits patients previously unsuitable for multi-incision surgery
- Over 300 procedures performed with the da Vinci SP system since March 2024
- Part of HCA UK’s broader robotic program, now with 8 da Vinci Xi systems across the network
“This technique offers a true alternative with clear patient benefits,” said Routledge. Backed by expert training from leading global surgeons, this launch reinforces HCA UK’s position at the forefront of robotic surgery innovation.
